Eisenhower Grant Aimed at Helping Middle and High School Math and Science Teachers

TAHLEQUAH - Northeastern State University recently received a $48,000 Eisenhower Grant from the Oklahoma State Regents designed for middle school and high school mathematics and science teachers.

The two-week summer residential workshop titled Developing Mathematics and Science Reasoning will meet June 17 to 21 and June 24 to 28, 2002, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Tahlequah campus.

Workshop courses will increase participants' mathematics and science content knowledge; enable participants to teach mathematics and science more effectively so their students develop the mathematics and science reasoning skills recommended by the ACT framework; demonstrate how to infuse technology into the teaching of mathematics and science through the use of graphing calculators and data collecting probes; and provide ongoing support for participants curriculum reformation efforts during the school year through follow-up meetings, e-mail, and web-based resources.

Eligible participants include middle school and high school mathematics and science teachers, particularly those currently participating in the Northeastern Oklahoma GEAR UP schools. The program is limited to 20 participants, and the deadline for all applications is May 30, 2002.

Each participant will receive a summer stipend of $500; three hours of graduate credit (tuition and fees will be waived); a Calculator Based Laboratory (CBL II) with basic probes; a Viewscreen; and a graphing calculator for classroom use (approximately a $500 value). Room and board will be available on the Tahlequah campus at no charge for 10 residential participants each summer.
