Actions Taken

  • Approval of March 12 Meeting Minutes. Sent out just before meeting, please email changes to Dave Kern
  • The task group draft Mission proposal was amended with a changed word order to improve the flow. The approved draft Mission statement is: "We empower individuals to become socially responsible global citizens by creating and sustaining a culture of learning and discovery."
  • The task group draft Values Statements were approved as amended. Input was provided by many participants. Each of the statements was discussed and voted on. The statement that generated the greatest level of discussion was the Leadership value, with a small majority approving the amended statement. The concern is that the focus on service does not adequately capture the full meaning. The approved draft Values Statements are noted below and attached in the form they would normally be presented.
    • Integrity: We model ethical and intellectual development by advancing honesty, human dignity, and accountability.
    • Collaboration: We build partnerships to create learning opportunities and promote educational and economic success.
    • Creativity: We advance knowledge by exploring new possibilities through critical inquiry and intellectual freedom.
    • Leadership: We have a compelling commitment to serve, inspiring and preparing others to do the same.
    • Excellence: We pursue continuous improvement individually and as a community.
  • Motion to circulate the draft Mission as approved today, the draft Values Statements as approved today, and draft Vision Statement as is, to the university community, asking for feedback was approved. The task force will continue to work on the Vision Statement, considering input from the President's Council retreat and the meeting with the Cabinet.

Reports and Notes

  • Information/Assessment/Accountability Task Group (Tom Jackson) priorities were approved
