Farina King, a citizen of the Navajo Nation, is Associate Professor of History and affiliated faculty of Cherokee and Indigenous Studies at Northeastern State University, Tahlequah, Oklahoma. She is also the director and founder of the NSU Center for Indigenous Community Engagement. She is the author of The Earth Memory Compass: Diné Landscapes and Education in the Twentieth Century, and co-author with Michael P. Taylor and James R. Swensen of Returning Home: Diné Creative Works from the Intermountain Indian School (November 2021)
Dr. Farina King will share insights about her journey of the interdisciplinary collaboration and community-based research of the traveling exhibit and co-authored book, Returning Home: Diné Creative Works from the Intermountain Indian School. This project features the voices and self-expressions of Navajo boarding school students who attended one of the country's largest federal American Indian schools in Brigham City, Utah, between 1950 and 1984. King works with boarding school survivors, descendants, and the community to share boarding school stories, experiences, and truths through art and creative writing that students did to return home while away at school.
