NSU Professor to Serve World Council of Optometry
TAHLEQUAH Douglas K. Penisten, O.D., Ph.D., associate
dean of the College of Optometry at Northeastern State University, was
recently named co-chair of the Education Committee of the World Council
of Optometry (WCO). The WCO is an international organization dedicated
to the enhancement and development of eye and vision care worldwide and
represents more than 50 countries.
WCO serves as a forum for member organizations to respond
to public health needs and opportunities around the world and is a unifying
voice and catalyst for international projects and services that meet the
needs of the optometric profession, ophthalmic industry, and public they
serve.
Penisten's appointment was based on his long-standing service
and commitment to optometric education. He was recently awarded the highest
honor for optometric education, the Michael G. Harris Family Award for
Excellence in Optometric Education. This award is given by the American
Academy of Optometry.
In addition to being the associate dean, Penisten is a professor
of optometry at NSU. He has been actively involved in international optometry
for many years and has lectured at numerous WCO meetings.
