NSU to host RiverHawk Christmas for area schoolchildren

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- To celebrate the holidays, Auxiliary Services at Northeastern State University has invited children from local schools to the RiverHawk Christmas event held from Dec. 10-14 in the University Center Redbud Room.

Schools that have already reserved space include Briggs, Hulbert and Grandview. Schools may make reservations through Nov. 30.

"This year we are also hosting a community picture day on Dec. 17," said Deanie Hensley, assistant director of NSU auxiliary services. "The Redbud Room will be open to all who wish to come between 3-5 p.m. for pictures with Santa for only $3."

At The RiverHawk Christmas event area school children will create a craft project to commemorate their visit, hear a story told by Mrs. Claus, have their picture taken with Santa, and see the movie Rudolph the Red-nose Reindeer. NSU mascot Rowdy the RiverHawk typically stops by to say hello as well.

"I love Christmas time," Hensley said. "I like watching the excitement in the eyes of the children when they see Santa and they get to speak to Mrs. Claus. These children are our future and as a community we want to provide them with positive experiences."
Schools are able to attend RiverHawk Christmas for just $2 per student. The fees are used to offset the cost of craft items, decorations, printed materials, pictures and candy canes. Hensley said the efforts of NSU volunteers keeps attendance inexpensive for the children.
"This is the fifth year for RiverHawk Christmas and I am very thankful and blessed to have wonderful volunteers to help," she said. "Jessica Langston, Terri Sneed, and Cole Martin have worked several years as volunteers along with the student workers who help at the craft tables and double as Rowdy."
RiverHawk Christmas also has important benefits for NSU, Hensley said.
"Our institution is frequently in contact with high schools, but this is an opportunity to build relationships with area elementary schools," she said. "It allows these children to have an enjoyable experience on our campus that they may one day recall when they are considering a college to attend."
