(TAHLEQUAH, OK)--The NSU Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Norman Wika, gives its first spring performance Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in the NSU Playhouse. The ensemble will perform works by Paul Hindemith, Warren Benson, and Morton Gould.
The Wind Ensemble will perform the fourth movement, "March," of Hindemith's "Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes of Carl Marie von Weber," based on themes from Weber’s Piano Duets, Op. 60 nos. 2 and 7.
Following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Benson decided to write a memorial to the fallen president. He composed "The Leaves are Falling," which opens with a slow-paced chime leading to a brass chorale setting of the Protestant hymn "A Might Fortress is Our God."
Gould’s symphony for band “West Point” was composed in 1952 for the West Point Sesquicentennial celebration. The work is in two movements.
The NSU Wind Ensemble comprises the top woodwind, brass, and percussion players from the NSU music department. It regularly performs on and off campus. For more information contact Judy Dunkin at (918) 444-2700. This concert is free and open to the public.
