Oklahoma Literacy Clearinghouse
HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The OKLAHOMA LITERACY INITIATIVES COMMISSION was created on May 2nd, 1989 by Senate Bill Number 420, Title 70, Section 8001. In its report to Governor David Walters and the 43rd Legislature, the OLIC recommended the establishment of a Clearinghouse for Literacy at Northeastern State University, Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The OKLAHOMA LITERACY CLEARINGHOUSE, funded by the 43rd Legislature, was established in August 1991.

THE PURPOSE OF THE OKLAHOMA LITERACY CLEARINGHOUSE

The Oklahoma Literacy Clearinghouse established a Literacy Referral Service as authorized by the former Literacy Initiatives Commission. This is a comprehensive inventory of all literacy resources in the State of Oklahoma. The Clearinghouse maintains the information in a current data base that is published annually in directory form. Clearinghouse provide a toll-free telephone number for anyone who would like access to the information in the data base.

The Clearinghouse functions within the State of Oklahoma and nationally as a repository for the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of local, state, and national data on literacy: conducts basic and applied research and publishes those results. The staff of the Clearinghouse conducts seminars and workshops for educators, legislators, school boards, business and industrial leaders on literacy and the economic, political, and social impact on the State of Oklahoma.

Through a cooperative effort, the Oklahoma Literacy Clearinghouse / Center for study of Literacy brings the faculty from NSU together with public school educators, social service professionals, state, business and industrial leaders to address the growing national crisis in literacy at the regional and state levels.
