 Adult Center Lab

The Northeastern State University Center for the Study of Literacy lends a hand to those seeking a better life.  The services provided at this facility are aimed at students of all ages in Muskogee County and the surrounding areas who wish to improve their basic skills.  The students and their families have the opportunity to study on computers.  Computer Assisted Instruction involves the use of computers and specialized educational software to tailor curriculum and pace of instruction to meet the needs of the students, allowing them to progress at their own pace.  The Adult Center Lab provides a positive learning experience without the pressure of the traditional classroom.

The Adult Center Lab was established in the Autumn of 1989 as a community educational facility to help adults develop basic literacy skills as well as basic and advanced skills in reading, writing, math, science and social studies.

Programs and Clientele:

The primary goal of the Adult Center Lab was to provide a site for adult education.  It has progressed beyond that basic goal to encompass the whole spectrum of students from pre-school aged children to adults.  Services are free to the public.

The Adult Center Lab offers a variety of programs to enhance the learning experience.  The Literacy Center works co-operatively with the NSU College of Optometry, to enhance their Vision Therapy program. College students may use test preparation software to aid in passing the Pre-Professional Skills Test, Medical College Admissions Test, Graduate Records Exam, or the Law School Admissions test.  The Centerís lab offers programs in basic literacy, reading, writing, math, science and social studies.

Method of Testing and Placement:

The Adult Center Lab provides placement testing for its students.  The Test of Adult Basic Education and Wide Range Achievement Test may be used to provide grade equivalent scores.  The scores aid in the placement of the student in the appropriate computer software program. A Practice-GED test is used as a diagnostic device to determine which of the five test areas of the GED program need re-enforcement.

Method of Instruction:

At The Adult Center Lab, computer and human assistance are available to help with the learning process.  The center provides Computer Assisted Instruction as well as stay to assist students.

Computing Resources:

The Adult Center computer lab has areas to aid its diverse group of students and their needs.  The Lab has 24 Pentium computers that provide internet access and laser quality printing.
