A survey of the development of American rock music from an historical and social
perspective, with an inclusion of current trends in rock and an emphasis on key
innovators of the genre.
2553 Music Theory I (Harmony) - 3 hours
A required course for music majors. Open to non-music majors. A study of the
basic materials of music through music analysis, composition, and associated
skills. Taken concurrently with Music Theory I (Aural).
2563 Music Theory II (Harmony) - 3 hours
A required course for music majors. Open to non-music majors. A continuation of
the concepts established in Music Theory I, covering traditional diatonic practice
with an expansion of harmonic vocabulary. Taken concurrently with Music Theory

2743 Jazz Appreciation - 3 hours
A history of jazz beginning with pre-jazz forms and continuing through avant-garde
and fusion.
3011 General Conducting - 1 hour
An introductory course for all students in conducting; covering basic problems for
the beginning conductor, basic rehearsal technique, tempo, expression, feeling
and duplicating metronome markings. Individual attention stressed and class
participation encouraged in critiques.
3030 Half Recital - 0 hours
Preparation for and successful performance of a recital of at least twenty-five
minutes of music of appropriate level of difficulty. Prerequisite: Junior standing.
3041 Music Theory III (Aural) - 1 hour
Melodies of more complex structure; introduction to harmonic dictation and part
singing. Prerequisite: 2 hours of sight singing, MUS 1541 or equivalent.
3061 Music Theory IV (Aural) - 1 hour
Continuation of MUS 3041. Four-part singing and dictation; modulation. Prerequisite: 3041 or equivalent.
3111 Keyboard Harmony - 1 hour
A practical skills course designed for keyboard majors which includes the study of score reading, sight reading, harmonization, improvisation, and figured bass
realization. May be repeated for credit. Offered as an applied music lesson. Prerequisite: MUS 2555 and MUS 2563.
3553 Music Theory III (Harmony) - 3 hours
The study of 18th and 19th century chromatic harmony. Includes exploration of
modulation, borrowed chords, Neapolitan 6ths and other practices of the period.
In-depth score analysis, student writing exercises and compositions utilized.
Prerequisite: 2563 or equivalent.
3563 Music Theory IV (Harmony) - 3 hours
The study of 20th century and contemporary compositional practices in harmony,
rhythm, and sound. In-depth score analysis, student writing exercises and compositions utilized. Prerequisite: 3553 or equivalent.
3753 History and Literature of Music I - 3 hours
Survey and development of music from early times to about 1750. Prerequisite:
MUS 1742, Intro to Music History and Literature.
3763 History and Literature of Music II - 3 hours
Survey and development of music from 1750 to present. Continuation of History and Literature I. Prerequisite: MUS 1742, Intro to Music History and Literature.
3772 Counterpoint - 2 hours
Contrapuntal writing, embracing strict and free styles from basic to larger
polyphonic structures. Prerequisite: 12 hours of harmony or permission of
department chairman.
3782 Form and Analysis - 2 hours
Study of musical structure, correlating harmonic and formal elements. Examination
and analysis of small and large forms from Baroque to present. Prerequisite: 12
hours of harmony or permission of department chairman.
3863 World Music - 1 hour
A study of the cross-cultural appreciation of the world’s musical traditions, utilizes
techniques of analysis to study selected examples and how music relates to
other cultures. Learn the fundamental resources for further study.
4002 Jazz Arranging and Composition - 2 hours
The study of composing and orchestrating music for jazz ensembles from three
pieces to large groups. Includes thorough coverage of chord symbols, composing
in the blues and jazz idioms, voicing for brass, woodwind and string instruments,
and the compositional approach to jazz arranging.
4011 Advanced Conducting and Rehearsal Techniques - 2 hours
Designed for seniors. Encompasses improvement of conducting skills in music of
various styles and periods. An overview of areas involved in operating instrumental
and choral programs. Prerequisite: MUS 3011
4031 Full Recital - 1 hour
Preparation for and successful performance of a recital of at least sixty minutes
of music of appropriate level of difficulty demonstrating a wide variety and historic
periods, and technique and musicianship. Prerequisite: MUS 3030 and senior
standing in the Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance Track.
4052 Music Pedagogy - 2 hours
A practical application of teaching techniques, including study of various teaching
methods, individual projects, and review of source material included.
4322 Music Notation and Sequencing - 2 hours
A study of software applications related to music notation and sequencing of MIDI
instruments. Development of music lead sheets, scores and individual parts for
desktop music publishing and recording of musical compositions through computer
MIDI interfacing. Prerequisites: MUS 3563, 4002, or 4912, or permission of
instructor.
4520 Seminar in Music - 1-3 hours
Designed to meet a number of needs or problems in the music field. Specific area
of focus will be indicated at time of offering. Any combination of courses in this
series may be taken to a maximum of 6 hours credit.

Philosophy, theory, and techniques of improvisation directed toward the public
school jazz band program. Study of Dixieland, swing, progressive jazz, bop, rock,

Study of representative masterworks from all periods with attention to characteristic
styles and related activities. Concentration on vocal forms.
