TELEPHONE

The campus phone system is designated for conducting business between departments, locally, or with long distance. Employees are asked to limit personal calls to a minimum and to use third party billing or personal credit cards for personal long distance calls that must be made at work.

PARKING

The parking and traffic system at NSU was established to provide an orderly, convenient parking system for faculty, staff, students and visitors on campus and to facilitate the safe operation of all motor vehicles on property owned or controlled by the University. All vehicles, including motorcycles, parked on University property must be registered with the NSU Parking & Traffic Office, except visitors to campus who are parked in designated visitor areas.

Staff and Faculty Parking

On-site parking lots designated as Staff and Faculty are available for use by all University employees. Faculty/Staff parking permits (blue) are required and may be purchased annually through the Parking & Traffic Office. In the event that a current permit holder drives a car to campus without a permit, a free temporary parking permit may be obtained. The temporary permit will then allow them to park in their regular parking area.

Visitors/Temporary Parking

Visitors to campus who are not affiliated with the University through enrollment or employment may obtain a free visitor parking permit from the Parking and Traffic Office. These temporary permits are also available at the Information Booth in the University Center parking lot or at the Information Desk in the lobby on the first floor of the Administration Building. Temporary permits typically will not be issued for more than two weeks. If you are aware that you will need a temporary permit, you can receive one up to one week in advance.

Complete rules and regulations regarding parking at NSU are available at the Parking & Traffic Office.

LOST AND FOUND

If you think you may have lost an item on campus, the best way to find it is to retrace your steps back to the last place you remember seeing it. If it was in a campus building, check any offices or rooms nearby or ask personnel in the area. Staff members in many locations keep found items for several days before turning it over to Lost and Found in the Campus Police Office.

If the lost item is of high value or involves the loss/finding of University keys or property, we suggest that you check with staff in the area AND notify Campus Police.

Once an item is turned in to Campus Police, attempts are made to identify the owner, who is then contacted to retrieve his or her property. If the owner cannot be identified or contacted, the item is kept for a minimum of 30 days, then donated or destroyed.

If you find property on campus, please bring it to the Campus Police Office at the corner of Grand Avenue and Crafton Street.

CAMPUS POLICE/DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY

The Campus Police offer a number of services to employees and students of the University, including assistance to individuals who may lock their keys in their vehicles or need to have a battery jump started. They also have an air tank to provide help in the event of a flat tire. Campus Police do not change tires unless the individual is elderly or pregnant and more than one officer is on duty.

In the event of an emergency, individuals should use the eight emergency phones (blue lights) located in parking lots around campus. These phones connect directly to the Campus Police Office, and an officer is dispatched to the area.

USE OF STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES

Student Health Services provides non-emergency medical treatment for minor illnesses and injuries to the University community. The services available are intended to supplement the medical support that students, staff, and faculty receive from their primary care physicians or clinics.

Student Health Services provides a full-time Nurse Practitioner and part-time physician free of charge to students, faculty and staff. Students are a priority. Some services such as lab tests, on site lab tests, medications, immunizations and injections require a fee.

Conditions requiring emergency or specialized care will be referred to the local community hospital or preferred provider chosen by the client. The Student Health Clinic does not do third party billing. Services must be paid for at time of visit.

If you have any questions, contact Student Health Services at ext. 2126.

VISION CARE

Optometric services at the College of Optometry are provided primarily to patients eligible for Indian Health Services (IHS) services through a contractual agreement with the Cherokee Nation and IHS. A limited number of services are available for vision needs of NSU faculty and staff. Ocular emergencies may be seen at the University Optometry Clinic during regular clinic hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and, if necessary, referred to an appropriate facility or doctor for further care. Employees desiring a general eye examination may contact the Optician (Extension 4103) who schedules a limited number of appointments in the Faculty Practice Plan. It should be noted that fees for examinations and materials (spectacles or contact lenses) are not free nor at a reduced rate because of the person’s status as an employee. Employees may utilize their Vision Service Plan insurance; however they are responsible for the co-pay amounts. In most instances, there is a waiting list to be scheduled for a vision examination.
