Your Personal Score Report

Three MAT scores appear on your personal Score Report: a scaled score, your percentile based on the intended major you indicated, and your percentile based on the current normative population of MAT examinees.

The test fee you paid covers one personal Score Report that will be mailed to you and Official Transcripts that will be sent to up to three schools specified by you when you take the MAT. Scores are valid for five years.

Taking the Test

The MAT is a high level mental ability test requiring the solution of problems states as analogies. It consists of 120 partial analogies administered in 60 minutes. The MAT is intended to measure the ability to recognize relationships between ideas, fluency in the English language, and general knowledge of the humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, and social sciences. There is no foreign-language edition of the MAT.

After you take the MAT, you will receive your personal score Report two to three weeks after the date the Harcourt Assessment receives your test. Your personal Score Report will provide you with the scaled score and percentile rank you received on the MAT. The MAT scaled scores currently range from 200 to 600 with a mean (average) of 400. The percentile rank on your personal Score Report indicates the percentage of examinees in the norm group ( all first-time MAT examinees from 2001 to 2003) who received a scaled score lower than yours. Percentile ranks range from 1 to 99. Your personal Score Report also includes a listing of the recipient schools you chose to receive your scores.

Solving MAT Analogies

There are four basic steps in solving the MAT analogy:

  • · First, read the three given terms in the analogy carefully.
  • · Next, determine the relationship between two of the terms that seems to form the most logical, complete pair. Remember that the order of the terms may vary.
  • · Then look at the remaining given term, and think of another term that would have the same kind of relationship to it as the two terms in the complete pair.
  • · Finally, examine the answer choices, and select the option that most closely resembles your idea of a term that would form a second pair.

Example: PINT: (a. cup, b, quart, c. liter, d. gallon) :: 1:2
Answer: “B” It represent volume that is twice that of a pint.

Make informed guesses—if you are uncertain about the answer to an analogy, try to eliminate the answer options that do not seem to fit and guess. If you make a random guess at an answer, you have a one-in-four chance of getting it right.

Answer Every Question: Your score is based entirely on the number of correct answers you provide; there is no penalty for incorrect answers.
