Cash

Cash is the most common and convenient form of giving. Cash gifts are available for immediate use by the University for the purpose(s) you specify. Cash gifts can be made in several ways, including cash itself, checks, credit card, money orders, or wire transfers. A gift of cash provides an immediate income tax deduction. You may make a cash gift online, or mail your cash gift to: NSU Foundation, 812 North Cedar, Tahlequah, OK 74464. Please make all checks payable to “NSU Foundation.”

Wills and Trust

Would you like to leave a lasting impact even after you’re gone? Put the NSU Foundation in your will or living trust. If you need the money for any reason, it’s yours to use. If you don’t use it during your lifetime, it will fund the scholarship or program that you intended.

Obviously, you will need to work with your lawyer to make provisions in your will or living trust for Northeastern. If you or your lawyer have any questions, please contact NSU Office of Development, by email at foundation@nsuok.edu or by phone at 918-458-2143.

The following is suggested language you could consider depending on your intentions:
1. If you want to leave a specific dollar amount: “I give, devise and bequeath to the Northeastern State University Foundation, Inc. in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, $_______.”
2. If you want to leave a percentage of an estate: “I give, devise and bequeath to the Northeastern State University Foundation, Inc. in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, _____% of my estate.”
3. If you want to leave a specific piece of property: “I give, devise and bequeath to the Northeastern State University Foundation, Inc. in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, (a description of the property) located at (exact location).”
4. If you want to leave the residue of an estate (that is the amount remaining after the specific bequests): “All the residue of my estate, including real and personal property, I give, devise and bequeath to the Northeastern State University Foundation, Inc., in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.”

Charitable Gift Annuity

Although the term might not be familiar, it is a simple concept – you make a gift of cash or stock and, in return the NSU Foundation guarantees you a lifetime income.

Here’s an example of how it works. Suppose at age 75, a woman we’ll call Ruth funds a gift annuity with $25,000. In return, the NSU Foundation pays her $1,975 a year for as long as she lives.

In addition, Ruth receives an immediate charitable deduction exceeding $10,000 on her income taxes as well as partially tax-free income for several years. At the same time, Ruth is helping NSU continue its tradition of offering a quality, accessible education to thousands of students.

The NSU Foundation also has gift annuities for couples. The rates, while slightly lower because of the longer life expectancies for couples, are still very attractive.

If you would like a free, no obligation illustration that is personalized just for you, please contact the NSU Office of Development, by email at foundation@nsuok.edu or by phone at 918-458-2143. We will need your birth date, the value of the gift annuity you are contemplating, and whether you desire lifetime payments annually, semi-annually, or quarterly. Another similar giving option is the Charitable Remainder Trust.

Securities and Real Property

A valuable contribution for both NSU and the donor is a gift of stock or real estate that has appreciated in value. The NSU Foundation acquires the appreciated stock or property that can be liquidated while you receive a tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the stock or land. You also avoid paying capital gains tax on the increase in value.

Life Insurance

Life insurance is a common way to support the NSU Foundation. Many people can provide NSU with a life insurance policy that has a face value that is much greater than what the donor can afford to give in cash. By naming the NSU Foundation as owner and beneficiary of the policy ensures that all future premium payments are tax-deductible. After establishing the policy, you can either pay the entire policy, or make annual contributions to the NSU Foundation for the cost of the premiums.
