Specific Requirements for Degrees

Bachelor's Degree in Education

  1. Major minimum of 40 hours
    Specific requirements in each major field are enumerated in the selections for the various areas in which majors are offered. Fifty percent of the major requirement on a bachelor’s degree program must be upper division courses (course numbered 3000 or 4000).

    • ECED 4513 Organization & Implementation of Early Childhood Programs OR
    • EDUC 4353 Teaching Methods and Practices
    • EDUC 4032 Pre-Internship II
    • EDUC 4823 Technology in Education
    • Intern Teaching and Seminar (12 hours)
  3. Electives to make a total of not less than 124 hours
ENGLISH PROFICIENCY English proficiency is a graduation requirement. Components I and II of English proficiency should be met with grades of “C” or better prior to graduation.
COMPUTER PROFICIENCY Effective Fall 1997, all new freshmen must meet computer proficiency in the first 30 hours of course work. This is an NSU graduation requirement.
UPPER DIVSION CREDIT Total hours must include at least 40 hours of credit in courses numbered 3000 and above. “C” or better required in all course work in major field and professional education.
LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES Please see individual majors for requirements.
RESIDENT COURSE WORK All candidates for a degree must complete a minimum of 30 hours in residence at this University. (See General Degree Regulations)
FOREIGN LANGUAGE COMPETENCY All Students must demonstrate proficiency at the high novice level in a language other than English.
4 X 12 REQUIREMENT Early Childhood, Elementary Education, and Special Education programs require completion of 12 semester hours with a grade of “C” or better in the following disciplines: Communication Arts (Engl, Spch, Lit), Math, Science and Social Science (Econ,
Geog, Hist, Pol Sci, Psyc, Soc) prior to graduation.
PROFESSIONAL PORTFOLIO All students pursuing initial and advanced teacher certification are required to develop a portfolio which documents their accomplishments, learning, and
strengths related to the competencies, standards, and outcomes established by the Oklahoma
Commission for Teacher Preparation, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, and the
Oklahoma State Department of Education.

The student who completes requirements for either the Bachelor of Arts in Education degree or the Bachelor of Science in Education degree and achieves passing scores on the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET), the Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT), and the Oklahoma Professional Teaching Exam (OPTE) will be eligible, upon recommendation of the Director of Teacher Education, to apply for a teaching license. A successful completion of a residency year is required to obtain a standard Oklahoma teaching certificate.
