Admission

Admission by Transfer

An undergraduate student who has enrolled in one or more colleges prior to applying to NSU must complete and submit an application for admission. The student must request an official transcript from each previous college attended, and is not at liberty to disregard any part of his/her records in order to apply for admission. Students who have attempted 24 or fewer hours of college credit should also request an official high school transcript and ACT scores. Students must be in good standing and eligible to re-enroll at the previous institution (not be on academic or disciplinary suspension.)

Students lacking curricular requirements are admissible into associate programs in the community colleges but must remove the deficiencies at the earliest possible time within the first 24 hours attempted. In addition, students must remove curricular deficiencies in a discipline area before taking collegiate level work in that discipline.

An undergraduate student who wishes to transfer from a State System institution to NSU may do so under the following conditions:

  1. If the student originally met both the high school curricular requirements and academic performance standards, she/he must have a grade point average high enough to meet the current retention standards.
  2. If the student originally met the high school curricular requirements but not the academic performance standards, she/he must have a grade point average high enough to meet the current retention standards based on at least 24 attempted semester credit hours of regularly graded (A, B, C, D, F) college work.
  3. If the student originally met the performance but not the curricular requirements, she/he must have a grade point average high enough to meet the current retention standards and must also have completed the curricular requirements before transferring.
  4. If the student originally met neither the curricular nor the performance requirements, she/he must have a grade point average high enough to meet the current retention standards based on at least 24 attempted semester credit hours of regularly graded (A, B, C, D, F) college work and must also have completed the curricular requirements before transferring.
  5. If the student is an education major, she/he must check for requirements prior to attending.

An undergraduate student who wishes to transfer from an out-of-state institution to NSU may do so by meeting the “Requirements for Admission” above, and by the following:

  1. Transcripts from colleges or universities accredited by the North Central Association or other regional associations will be given full value.
    1. Each nonresident applicant must be in good standing in the institution from which she/he plans to transfer.
    2. Each nonresident applicant must have made satisfactory progress (an average grade of “C” or better or meet the current retention standards, whichever is higher).
  2. Transcripts from institutions not accredited by a regional association may be accepted in transfer when appropriate to the student’s degree program and when NSU has had an opportunity to validate the courses or programs. Each nonresident undergraduate applicant must meet a-1 and a-2 above and will also be required to validate the transferred credit by making satisfactory progress (an average of “C” or better) for at least one semester.

Transfer Probation

Students who do not meet the academic criteria including curricular requirements as noted above, but have not been formally suspended, may be admitted as “transfer probation” students. Institutions may develop policies and procedures, subject to State Regents approval, to guide the admission of transfer students who do not meet the requirements. Such policies should include that these students are admitted on probation and must maintain a 2.0 grade point average each semester while on probation or raise their cumulative GPA to the designated level, as detailed in “Retention Standards.” Any “transfer probation” student with curricular deficiencies must remove the deficiencies within the first 12 hours of enrollment. Additionally, it is expected that institutions provide the appropriate academic support services to assist such students in achieving academic success.

*Transfer student: any undergraduate student with greater than six attempted credit hours, excluding remedial (0-level courses) or pre-college work and excluding credit hours accumulated by concurrently enrolled high school students.
