NSU Band

All students interested in attending Northeastern State University and participating in the band are encouraged to audition for a band scholarship. Band scholarships are awarded on the merit of a student’s audition and are available for any student regardless of their academic major. Scholarship awards range from $200 - $1,000 a semester and require that students participate in marching band in the fall and the wind ensemble or concert band in the spring, enroll in and complete at least 12 credits per semester, and maintain a 2.3 cumulative grade point average each semester.

Students are encouraged to schedule a scholarship audition as soon as possible even if they are considering attending other schools. A scholarship audition is not a commitment to attend any particular school and knowing what resources are available can prove to be valuable as you make plans to pay for your education. A scholarship audition can be scheduled by contacting Dr. Norman Wika at (918) 444-2706.

Your scholarship audition should highlight your musical abilities. Select audition music that you are comfortable playing. All-District and All-State audition etudes would make ideal audition music. Solos you have prepared for solo and ensemble contest make excellent audition music as well. Your audition does not need to be memorized and if you are playing a solo you do not need to have the accompaniment. The audition itself will take anywhere from 10 – 20 minutes. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible so you can perform at your best.

Students interested in becoming music majors will need to contact Dr. Wika about setting up a music department entrance audition, which can occur at the same time as the band scholarship audition. Perspective music majors will be asked to play a prepared solo as well as selected scales and a sight reading selection. In addition, you will take short screening exams in music theory (written and aural) and music history. Students are not expected to have any previous experience in any of the areas being tested. The tests are primarily to track a student’s progress within the program.
