The Accounting Program at Northeastern State University is designed to prepare the accounting major for a career in the accounting profession, either public, private, or governmental. In addition, the accounting curriculum is designed to develop the accounting student’s ability to work effectively, to become mentally disciplined, to communicate orally and in writing, to be aware of professional responsibilities, to develop an appreciation of the accountant’s high standard of integrity, and objectivity in reporting. The Accounting Program is structured to provide the non-accounting major with basic accounting knowledge for use in a chosen major field and personal life.

The Bachelor of Arts in American Indian Studies is designed for all persons interested in the cultural heritage and history of American Indian peoples. The major is a multi-disciplinary liberal arts program with required courses in anthropology, history, literature, and political science or criminal justice. Electives can be chosen from a broad choice of subjects which focus on Native Americans and their experiences as well as their influences within society.

American Indian Studies majors must also select a minor or a second major. Suggested minors include: anthropology, business administration, criminal justice, health care administration, history, hospitality and tourism management, paralegal studies, public administration, sociology, and social welfare. A student may want to consider selecting a second major in one of the above areas, or combining American Indian Studies with another appropriate major.

The Business Administration major provides a diversified background in the various disciplines necessary for success in the field of business. Regardless of the future occupation of the student, a background in the basic business areas is an essential ingredient of effective business decision-making. The Business Administration major allows a student to tailor his or her degree to individual career objectives with more flexibility than other majors.

With guidance from an academic advisor, students choosing the Business Administration major complete the major requirements by selecting courses from the functional business areas which best meet their academic and career objectives.

The Communication Studies program at Northeastern State University offers you the opportunity to specialize in Communication in Relationships, Corporate Communication, Theory and Research, or Applied Performance and Delivery. Along with excellent classroom instruction, our award winning students have the opportunity to hone their communication skills in a variety of applied settings. The department houses the Forensics and Debate program and the Communication Lab. So as you can see, if you are interested in a career in a communication related field, Communication Studies has a place for you.

The entrepreneurship major exposes students to vital skills needed in starting a new business, expanding the family business, owning a franchise, starting a professional practice, or preparing for a fast track corporate career. Courses focus on the ability to identify new opportunities for creating value and translating imagination into action to exploit those opportunities. Students are grounded in relevant theory in addition to applied principles of entrepreneurship.

Being an environmental, health and safety professional involves protecting America’s workforce, the public and the environment from injury, illness and damage. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates approximately 20 percent growth in job opportunities in this field over the next 10 years.

The Finance major is divided into two areas of emphasis: the Financial Management Emphasis and the Financial Planning Emphasis. The Financial Management Emphasis prepares students to perform effectively in a variety of financial management activities. Graduates can pursue careers in small business, corporate financial management, banking, insurance, investment management, real estate, and mortgage companies. Course work involves the study of financial instruments, financial practices, the structure and functions of financial institutions, the legal and economic context within which financial operations are conducted, investment analysis, portfolio management, business forecasting, and economic analysis.

The Financial Planning Emphasis prepares students for careers as financial advisors. Financial planning is one of the fastest growing segments of the financial serviced industry. Career opportunities are found in financial planning firms of various sizes, law firms, brokerage firms, insurance companies, and accounting firms. Financial Planners are also hired by corporations to organize and maintain employee benefit plans and by bank trust departments. Course work centers around wealth creation and retention. Areas of study include investments, risk management, estate planning, taxation, and analysis of retirement-based programs.

The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. owns the marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM, and CFP(with flame logo)®, which it awards to individuals who successfully complete initial and ongoing certification requirements. Northeastern State University does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM, and CFP(with flame logo)® certification marks. CFP Certification is granted only by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. to those persons who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as the Northeastern State University Financial Planning Area of Emphasis (a CFP Board-Registered Program), have met its ethics, experience, and examination requirements.

Northeastern State University offers a Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) degree for adult students (over 21 years of age) who have already completed at least 50 hours of college credit with a minimum 2.00 cumulative grade point average. There are 38 areas of specialization available. One of the 18-hour core areas can be tailored to the individual needs of the student with approval of the program coordinator. A major in geography may be earned by completing the specified course work. A minor may be earned by selecting 18 hours from any geography courses. It is recommended that students take Geography 2243, Fundamentals of Geography, prior to attempting other geography courses. At least 18 hours of advanced (3000, 4000) courses are required on a geography major. Eighteen hours of this major must be earned at NSU. A grade of “C” or better is required on all courses in the major.

The Hospitality and Tourism Management program offers a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and provides students with the knowledge necessary for success in enterprises related to the meetings, travel, gaming and hospitality industries. The Hospitality and Tourism Management program is approved by the Professional Convention Management Association.

The program consists of three distinct but interrelated components: meeting and convention management, tourist destination development, and gaming. Students may select one option or elect to complete two or three areas.

The meeting and convention management program emphasizes managing and serving meetings, conventions, trade shows, and special events. The student who specializes in tourist destination development studies the development, management and marketing of tourist attractions and destinations. The gaming emphasis specializes in managing casinos and gaming operations.

Computerized information systems are common in every area of modern business. The demand for IS professionals who can design and maintain computerized information systems will continue to grow as we move into the 21st century. People majoring in IS become proficient in aspects of information system management common to all organizations, including: operating systems; local and global telecommunications; 5th generation programming; systems analysis; systems design; database and enterprise resource management; and e-business solutions.

The International Business major has been developed for students who are actively seeking to focus their education on the global dimensions of business. The International Business major has the objective of providing students with a solid basic business education and knowledge of the international dimensions of business. In addition to IBUS courses, students also choose an area of specialization to obtain depth in a field of business (e.g., marketing, finance, management, etc.) that will complement the international training and assist them in obtaining a first job.

The management major allows students to develop knowledge and skills in the behavioral, decision science and strategic aspects of the management field. A behavioral emphasis focuses on the team and its members and the importance of human relations in enabling the organization to meet its objectives. Decision science introduces many of the quantitative tools so important in the modern business environment. Computer applications and examples of quantitative problem solving play an important part in this aspect of the program. Strategic management focuses on the long-range survival of the company within a changing environment. Students learn to identify opportunities and threats and make decisions, through proper planning, to meet the challenges imposed by competition, regulation, changing technology and limitations imposed by resource scarcity.

Marketing is the performance of business activities which direct the flow of goods and services from producer to consumer or user in order to satisfy customers and accomplish the company’s objectives. With a capacity to produce an abundance of goods and services, businesses in the United States have been compelled to study the market in order to be properly able to respond to its demands. Marketing is a relatively new discipline having been developed in the twentieth century with most of its impetus since 1930. The study of marketing incorporates the use of most business subjects (accounting, management, law, etc.) and the behavioral sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology.)

To become a Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist, the student must have three years of prescribed college work (94 hours) and must complete a one-year internship in an approved school of Medical Technology.

The degree curriculum meets the requirements of the Board of American Society of Clinical Pathology, completion of which will admit the student to an approved hospital for the internship.

Upon completion of the internship, the student takes a certification examination administered by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Services. Upon passage the student is certified as a medical laboratory scientist, MLS (ASCP) and become a fully accredited member of the medical team. Full college credit will be given for the internship year and applied toward the Bachelor of Science Degree.

Medical Laboratory Technician to Medical
Laboratory Scientist

Students with an Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science degree and employed as a Medical Laboratory Technician are eligible to take 60 upper division credits combining biology and chemistry courses along with advanced clinical courses. Laboratory practices are completed in their place of employee and successful completion of this program earns the student a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science and eligibility for the American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Certification examination.

Before pursuing a major in music, all students must successfully complete a performance audition for entrance into the applied area of concentration (instrumental, piano, vocal). This requirement must be fulfilled before degree plans can be approved and advisors assigned.

Music majors are required to participate in at least one music ensemble per semester as specified in the individual degree plans. They are to pass Band (MUS 3611), or Chorus (MUS 3631).

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Music Education (Instrumental winds and percussion) are required to pass Band a minimum of seven semesters. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (Jazz option - winds and percussion) are required to pass Band (MUS 3611)a minimum of two academic years after which MUS 3641(Jazz Band I ONLY) may satisfy the music organization requirement or as directed by the major advisor.

Instrumental music majors with an emphasis in guitar may choose an appropriate ensemble as prescribed by their advisor.

All music majors are required to take MUS 3863 World Music as part of the humanities hours in the general education requirements.

Minimum Grade Requirements (Music) - Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in music courses to be used in either major or minor. Grades lower than a “C” on NSU or transfer credit will not apply for music major or music minor.

All music majors must pass the Junior Standing Jury (except BA Music Business and Music Theatre students) as prescribed by the music area (keyboard, instrumental, vocal) before enrollment in any 4000 level applied music. Junior standing is also a prerequisite to MUS 3030, Half Recital and MUS 4031, Full Recital.

Students are to declare a major in music by the beginning of their sophomore year. Transfer students are to declare a major in music by the end of their first semester as an NSU student.

At least one fourth of the total semester hours in the major applied music area must be upper level credit from NSU (except BA Music Theatre and BA Music Business option students).

The Northeastern State University Social Work Program offers and upper-division professional social work curriculum built upon a liberal arts foundations which leads to a Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.) degree accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (C.S.W.E.). Its primary mission is to provide academic preparation and contribute to the professional and intellectual growth and development of individuals who desire to enter generalist social work practice in a wide range of social agencies and allied settings with diverse client systems for various sizes and types. Students who graduate from our B.S.W. program are eligible for an Oklahoma state license to practice generalist social work.

The theatre program at NSU is designed to prepare students to enter the professional theatre workforce as well as to pursue graduate studies in specific areas of theatre. The NSU Theatre Company provides students with constant opportunities for practical experience onstage and off. A graduate from the NSU Theatre program boasts a generalist knowledge in all areas of theatre as well as an extensive resume balancing performance and hands-on technical experience.

Students graduate with a bachelor of arts degree in theatre and have ample opportunity to pursue theatre scholarships throughout their college experience. Students interested in majoring or minoring are encouraged to contact the theatre coordinator immediately in order to begin plotting their roadmap to degree completion.
